I spent a long exile in the corporate world before committing myself to writing and teaching. I am keenly interested in issues of the teaching of reading and writing — not just creative writing, but rhetoric and composition too. I believe that clear writing abets clear thinking, and vice versa.
I was a member of the committee that organized the founding conference for the Canadian Creative Writers and Writing Programs (CCWWP) organization in October 2011. The conference was energizing, and the work of CCWWP going forward contributes to the cultural fabric of Canada.
In my academic research and interests, I am committed to engaging learners in the processes of inquiry and praxis. I have made frequent presentations regarding pedagogy to CCWWP, the U.S.-based Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP), the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment (ASLE), and The Association for Literature, Environment, and Culture in Canada (ALECC).
